Where Did Mother’s Day Come From?

Celebration of motherhood can be traced back into history, in fact, all the way back to the ancient Greek and Roman cultures. They held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. The closest ancestor to the US Mother’s Day holiday is the early Christian festival called “Mothering Sunday.” It was during this festival that Christian believers would return to their “mother church” for a special service.

As time went on, the tradition became more secular. In 1914, the secular Mother’s Day celebration was set for the second Sunday in May and was made an official US holiday. The U.S. holiday’s creator, Anna Jarvis, was upset at how commercialized the holiday became and actually spend the last chunk of her life working to have it removed from the calendar.
